The Epidemic of Counterfeit Bearings in LatAm

Panama is the “Hub of the Americas.” We are the connecting point for global trade. But this great advantage has a dark side: The massive influx of counterfeit products.

Walk through any industrial zone in Panama City or Colon, and you will find spare parts that look legitimate at incredibly low prices. An SKF box identical to the original, a Timken bearing with the logo laser-etched… but at half the price.

For a purchasing manager, it looks like a bargain. For a maintenance manager, it is a nightmare waiting to happen.

At Ivor Bearings Inc., we fight this every day. Here is how to protect your operation from the imitations flooding the local market.

The Hidden Danger in the Blue Box

Today’s counterfeits are not like those of 10 years ago. Counterfeiters copy holograms, barcodes, and even the quality of the cardboard.

  • The Risk: The steel used in a fake is of low purity. Under load, these bearings can fracture catastrophically, not only stopping the machine but risking the safety of your operators.
  • The Reality: In critical Panamanian industries like Construction, Ports, and Food & Beverage, a catastrophic failure costs thousands of times more than what was “saved” on the spare part.

3 Steps to Verify Authenticity

1. Use Technology (The WBA App)

Major brands (SKF, Timken, Schaeffler/FAG) joined forces to create the World Bearing Association (WBA).

  • The Tip: Download the “WBA Bearing Authenticator” app. Scan the QR or Datamatrix code on the box. If the code is not recognized or has been scanned too many times, you have a fake in your hands.

2. Inspect the Laser Marking

  • The Tip: Run your fingernail over the brand marking on the steel.
  • Original: The etching is usually chemical or deep laser and very sharp.
  • Fake: It is often a shallow, blurry, or acid-etched mark that feels rough or irregular to the touch.

3. The Golden Rule: The Source

This is the only 100% safe way. Premium manufacturers do not sell to unauthorized resellers. If you buy a “brand name” bearing at a general hardware store or from an uncertified reseller in Panama, there is a high probability it is “gray market” or fake.

Ivor Bearings: Your Guarantee of Origin

We don’t play with your safety. We are part of the official supply chain. When you receive a bearing from our warehouse in the Free Zone or Panama, it comes with direct factory traceability.

We offer:

  • Certificates of Conformity: Guarantee that the steel is real.
  • Technical Advice: If you have doubts about a part you bought elsewhere, we can help you inspect it.
  • Premium Brands: SKF, TIMKEN, FAG, NTN, KOYO.
